We visited Raby Castle, a medieval castle located near Staindrop in County Durham, among 200 acres of deer park. It is famed for both its size and its art, including works by old masters and portraits.
We had refreshments in the Grand Hall. There was then an extensive informative a tour of the Castle. We were ready for lunch after that, which was soup and sandwiches, served in the servants' kitchen.
After lunch, many of us completed two or all three of the recommended Raby Castle walking routes through the 200 acre estate, with its lakes and herds of red and fallow deer. We had excellent weather, with several of us staying on to watch a cricket match or to enjoy the cafe in the grounds.
